Introduction:

People Products org. at Facebook has a set of products for managing the workforce and hiring. Our cross-functional team was assigned to improve the UI / UX of several products, namely the Managers portal, the Hiring Hub.

Problems:

  • Existing products looked dated and needed multiple updates

  • Information architecture needed revision since we had evidence that people find some pages/sections unusable or need updates

  • New functionalities needed to be introduced to the existing products

My role:

  • I was one of the senior designers assigned to this project

  • Our task was to conduct preliminary research and come up with a plan on how to implement a series of incremental improvements

  • Further, I was in charge for the creation of necessary documentation, designs in Figma, and collaboration with other related stakeholders

  • Make sure that the latest XDS Design system components are used across the updated products

Finding a solution (Research, Concepting, Collaboration, etc.):

  • Conducted UX research to identify parts of UI / UX that have to be improved

  • Collected feedback from internal stakeholders using these products and identify issues with existing features/functionalities

  • Created a plan for incremental improvements of products

  • Created updated UX flows reflecting all proposed improvements for the products

  • Held a presentation of proposed designs to the internal workday team, then to the org.

Identifying areas for improvements

Outcomes / Success stats:

  • Redesigned multiple parts of People Products experiences
    – Introduced new modules/components requested by various stakeholders from workforce hiring and managers
    – Upgraded components to match the latest components from the XDS library

  • Conducted user testing of updated experiences internally (implemented feedback from several iterations)

  • Updated information architecture satisfied the manager’s needs as well as People Products org. requirements.

  • Updated products and newly introduced modules improved usability and feature discoverability and resulted in the efficiency of the manager’s portal and Hiring hub

Learnings:

  • Due to the complexity of People Products Org., it was harder than I initially anticipated to find all related stakeholders and understand all existing pain points.

  • It turned out to be quite challenging applying XDS components since not all possible variations were available at the library at the time.
